STAYING CLOSED TO THE TRUTH

“The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them “ — Thomas Jefferson STAYING CLOSED TO THE TRUTH The current news trends in general are marked by societal division and draw into extremism on all sides, similar to what we have now. The question is, how do we keep sane and close to the truth as possible in these times? Today I will reveal the exact way that I have done it by combining the advice of people who have been through these before and applying it to the new age. The advice is common and most effective at most times. Take your news from both sides, take out the differences and things in common, and filtered by common sense is most likely to be true. Look at the extremes and the sources in the middle. They will all have biases and agendas however since those agendas clash, what is not in common, tends to be false. The other advice is to look to the newcomers in the media, these tend to be idealistic journalists, the dying bastions of journalistic integrity before they are squashed or acquired by larger outfits. Today we have a way to combine these two in a way that is easier than ever! That is Youtube, you can always watch individual journalists and content creators on both sides of the spectrum however Youtube being an open platform you might still want to stay away from the very extremes and keep to those who try to uphold some journalistic integrity and reliance on facts even though those facts are usually cherry-picked and distorted, with some experience of watching both sides you will be able to notice the distortion in no time. With that being said, the ones for the left side I have seen being somewhat entertaining and informative were Contrapoints and Hbomberguy. These essayists tend to research their topic reasonably well and try to back up their point of view with facts. I should however warn you that this being YouTube, you will see more shocking content, mostly from Contrapoints because part of her platform is costumes and acting. On the right side, we have Black Pigeon Speaks and Sargon Of Akkad. while I may not always agree with their message, you can see they have done their research and are engaging in what mainstream media should have been doing, evidence, and then maybe, their point of view. Lastly, I would like to mention Caspian Report for relatively Apolitical geopolitical analysis, as a way to balance the aforementioned relatively extreme content creators. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LATINO AND QUEER

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LATINO AND QUEER To be Latino today is to be diverse. Latinos come in different shapes, sizes, sexual orientations, colors and backgrounds, so it’s no longer feasible to maintain old stereotypes of Latinos as a whole. Today’s culture is far more accepting of these differences and has opened a brand-new dialogue as to what it means to be Latino in the 21st century. Queer identities have always been present in Latin communities but have only been recognized up until recently. To no one’s surprise, the delay in queer inclusion within Latin communities can be attributed to deeply rooted homophobia and toxic masculinity, more formally known amongst Latinos as “Machismo” This has a lot to do with Catholic influence on Latin communities. Though ever threatening, it has left queer Latin activist undeterred. The queer and Latin community have made many strides in recent times. So, let’s take it back to where it all started. In the summer of 1969, a series of brutal riots and demonstrations occurred. These riots were led by trans women of color against the NYPD for their vicious attacks against the LGBT community. These riots are what triggered the following Gay Rights Movements, so it begs the question… who are we to thank? Countless people, of course. No movement can be attributed to one person, as it would erase the efforts of those who have put their lives on the line for said movement. But if we are to recognize at least one person, it would most definitely be Ms. Sylvia Rivera, transgender rights activist and self-proclaimed drag queen. She was rumored to have thrown one of the first Molotov cocktails during the riots but was this was later debunked in a 2001 interview. All gossip aside, Rivera did become a leading voice of a revolution. She continued her activism up until her death in 2002. She paved the way for many queer Latinos (queer people in general) despite having the odds stacked against her. In modern times, being queer and being Latino still has its ups and downs. It has become more celebrated within the LBGTQ+ community, notably creating new terms to represent gender non-conforming people of Latin American descent, “Latinx”, as they call it. It is an alternate of Latino or Latina and caters to those who don’t identify with being male or female. It is a gender-neutral term, which is hard to come by in the Spanish language, being that almost all words are influenced by gender. It’s renowned. What’s unfortunate though, is that violence against queer Latinos is still never-ending. Despite the progress made and the amount of representation queer Latinos have now, they are still heavily targeted, and it is estimated in 2014 that LGBTQ+ people are the most likely targets of hate crimes in America, vast majority of those killed were black or Latino transgender people. THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION

THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION Why do we need knowledge and how do we utilize education? What is the importance of knowledge and education? Ask a couple of five-year old kids and they will say “to become smart” or to be someone famous! As cute as it sounds, there is a lot more truth to just becoming smart or becoming famous. Knowledge is a way to gain necessary information and applying it. It is a tool to further your education. It is an instrument to get out of “the box.” Knowledge is Power! Knowledge is information that your brain stores so that when you question or try to understand things, you will have the appropriate answers and awareness to situations, events and problems. Knowledge is the ability to develop solutions by way of making sense of things, but there’s more, a lot more that becomes Education as the sum of all the knowledge you store for years and years throughout one’s life. The point is to utilize this education to make a positive difference. It’s really about growth and self-development. So how do we gain Knowledge and education? Let’s start with people. When we talk with and hear people, we are getting knowledge about them. When we are invited to a conversation, we gain a better understanding about someone and the situation. Whether it’s a conversation, or personal news, at the end of it, we know a little more than we did when we began. The best part is the learning process. Knowledge is an event that is learned. Education is also a learning experience. Traditionally, we go to school and we learn facts, figures and equations. This is the knowledge we learn to get an education. Ask another five-year old what Education is, and they will most likely say “Education is school.” So really, Knowledge and education go hand in hand, but the learning experience is everything you collect and store in your brain which becomes your way of thinking. From your way of thinking comes your way of life and it all goes back to your way of collecting knowledge, which becomes your education. What you learn, collect and store, is the importance you put on your knowledge and education, because education is not only about going to school, but how you apply your learning and knowledge to life. Obtaining knowledge and education is not hard nor is it impossible because one learns every day. How you utilize the knowledge you gain is the knowledge which eventually becomes your education! Its importance is based solely on YOU! I hope you understand that the importance of Knowledge and Education is YOU!
