“IN HONOR OF ABBY” BUTTERFLY BALL: ABBY’S PROMISE

“IN HONOR OF ABBY” BUTTERFLY BALL: ABBY’S PROMISE “To honor Abby Soto, who wanted to help others, by financially assisting college-bound students; alleviating financial stress of families of pediatric cancer patients; and supporting head and neck cancer research.” Life was celebrated with joy and tenderness at The Butterfly Ball held by Abby’s Promise  in memory of the fierce and beautiful spirit of Abby Soto. I had the privilege and honor of being part of this year’s Ball and in partaking in the foundation’s mission,  “To honor Abby Soto”, who wanted to help others, by financially assisting college-bound students; alleviating financial stress of families of pediatric cancer patients; and supporting head and neck cancer research. As a member of a socially conscious and progressive community and tribe, I am very proud to have experienced the work and the commitment of Patricia Bonilla, an event planner and foundation member — working to make Abby’s promise come to life. Abby’s spirit was there smiling, walking through and embracing loved ones and friends united for cancer pediatric patients. Let me introduce you to Abby and who she was and what her spirit represented and represents today. Please take a moment, check the work being done with love, and grace through Abby’sPromise.Org. Their work is amazing, here is their touching tribute to Abby: “Our precious Abby is resting in peace. She fought cancer for nearly 1.5 years with such grace and strength, promising herself to smile every day. She never complained and was optimistic even when she knew that God had other plans. Many people don’t accomplish what she did in 18 years. She liked trying different things and she tried many different sports. She was always up for a challenge, and never allowed anyone to tell her she couldn’t do something. Abby was always independent and committed to her education. She loved writing and was so brilliant. She was very excited when she received college acceptances, four with full scholarships. She was selfless, always thinking of others. Simply put, she was the perfect, purest soul, and she is already guiding us to make a difference. Abby will live forever in our hearts. I am urging our community of writers and artists to get in touch with the foundation and to make donations for their programs of books and artwork. I was very touched by the beautiful activity table at the Ball for children to express their creativity. Please support their amazing initiatives and Abby’s amazing spirit! MARCH – MONTH OF THE WOMEN

MARCH 8th is a global day, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, worldwide. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively, everywhere. IWD is not a country, group, or organization specific.  There are more women in the boardroom, more equality in legislative rights, and an increased visibility of women as role models in every aspect of life.  The unfortunate truth is that women are still not paid equally, women are not equally present in business or politics, and globally women’s education, health and the violence against them is worse. Great strides have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, schoolgirls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family. Each year the world sets aside a date to recognize and inspire women and celebrate their worldwide achievements. 1909:  The first National Woman’s Day (NWD) was observed across the U.S. on 28 February. 1975: First time the United Nations celebrated International Women’s Day. 1977:   The General Assembly proclaimed United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. 1979: The Hispanic Women’s League became official in Buffalo, New York. 1996:  The UN adopted the theme “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future”. 1997:  The second theme was “Women at the Peace table” at the United Nations. 1998:  Third theme “Women and Human Rights”. 1999:   Fourth theme was “World Free of Violence Against Women”. 2011:  The first IWD event was held exactly a hundred years ago in 1911.  In the United States, President Barack Obama proclaimed “Women’s History Month”, reflecting on how women have significantly shaped our country’s history. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton launched the “100 Women Initiative: Empowering Women and Girls. In the United Kingdom, celebrity activist Annie Lennox led a superb march across one of London’s bridges raising awareness. If you still do not know why women need your support: 1- The women in your life have had their herstory invalidated. 2- Women are paid $.70 to the men’s’ dollar. 3- Women’s health is not easily accessible or appropriate. 4- Violence against women is at an all-time high. “As long as women’s’ happiness is sacrificed, peace for humanity can never be realized. When women shine, they shed light upon their households, their communities and their societies. Therefore, we need to make the 21st century a Century of Women, a time when women will take center stage.” — The quote comes from “Living Buddhism.” February 2020: So, make International Women’s’ Day your day…. WHAT MATTERS MIGHT NOT MATTER

WHAT MATTERS MIGHT NOT MATTER In the past two decades, something very peculiar happened. As we have gained access to people, at just about any time we desire, via internet or phone, we have had the pace of our lives quicken very subtly. Now when something happens, we do not wait for the next day to inform people. We tell them immediately. When an emergency or something relatively major occurs, we notify others. I think this reality has intervened with the psychological rhythm of how process and handle problems and quite a few people have been taking advantage of that. Please allow me to elaborate.  President tweets X statement, that statement hits news immediately with all the other great tragedies occurring around the world. The news naturally is not reporting advancements or good things — after all those do not sell. That makes sense! Why panic about something good? Then, the said news reports it as the world is coming to an end; they need the ratings! The viewers, you and I, instantly think it is a huge issue, while in truth, it has no bearing on anyone. This is clear to anyone who can think, but unfortunately, that is not the case. This instant and perpetual state of panic makes people who are compelled into watching and hearing more; how can they protect themselves from a threat they do not know? Thus, they watch it, but at the end of the day, the news never mentions what this small thing means in the big picture or in the daily lives of the people. Think of the whole debacle that was created by Donald Trump’s impeachment. The Democrats knew it would never pass without a miracle, it ended up being nothing but a drama, and very little was accomplished if anything. Then again, one can say the same thing about our politicians or elected officials, however, there is a lesson here. Do we ask the question, what does this ultimately mean? That is the question we must always ask. Not to shirk responsibility but quite the opposite. What is the point in panicking, or even wasting time on something that ultimately does not matter? This can certainly be applied to any aspect of a person’s life. It is of course good to be in the know, but it is important not to be emotionally invested in any of this news. In that way, we will be able to look at things calmly and rationally. Simply ask the question, does this has any bearing on me? Can I somehow influence it? If not to both of those questions, then why worry, to begin with? Save that energy for things that truly matter.
