THE WHOLE WORLD MATTERS

THE WHOLE WORLD MATTERS During these times of worldly crisis, it makes me appreciate things that money cannot buy. I have been fortunate to witness many people formally trained or not, show these qualities. Compassion: The deep feeling of sharing the suffering of another in the inclination to give or provide aid. I have seen compassion rule many decisions, but mostly to take care of the sick. I have learned to deeply admire people who work, at a high risk to themselves, to treat and protect the rest of us. Wisdom: Understanding of what is true, right or lasting. I have learned about wisdom from people making just, healthy decisions and how to handle this crisis. It does not matter the education, income or religion, I have seen it happen. Courage: The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger with self-possession, confidence and resolution. I have learned the courage it takes to serve people while you know  it is their last moment. People who continue facing danger while still working to serve the sick, the weak and vulnerable despite it all. I have learned that if you polish and apply these values, in your life, you still will not come close to what these people are doing all over the world. There is no preparation on how to address this nor do we know when it will end. Like many other people, I feel helpless, just staying home. Like many other people, I feel scared for my loved ones. Like many other people, I wait for the crisis to end. How can we help? 1- Stay tuned in to reliable sources of information: i.e. CDC, your state department of health. 2- wash your hands. 3- minimize your human contacts. 4- Take only what you need. 5- Check on your elderly, the vulnerable and the children. I would like to take this moment to bow my head to all those people who keep providing us with  food, electricity, water, protection, medical provisions, etc. All these which I need on a daily basis. It is at these moments that I see how the whole world means to me. For however long or short, it may be, this is our life journey, and the whole world matters. F E A R “There is so much blood pumping through your brain, it is like rocket fuel. Right now, you can run faster, and you can fight harder and jump higher than ever in your life! You are so alert that it’s like you can slow down time! What is wrong with scared? It is a superpower! It is your superpower” –  Doctor Who S8E4 Fear is a superpower, but with great power, comes great responsibility. Without wisdom, strength is less than useless, and it can become very destructive, and it has… These past few weeks, due to the reality of the Coronavirus, that is exactly what we have seen. People with purchasing power, go to the extreme, buying all the toilet paper (for some reason), and even some going as far as price gouging. Fear, however, has an important place in the human psyche. It’s as the Doctor said (above), it is one of the great superpowers that humans have — but we merely need to learn to use it. As anyone has witnessed, someone under the effects of emotion will react in an unpredictable or specific pattern. The individual who is afraid is more likely to run or fight, however, the angry person is more likely or certain to fight. Their rational judgment is suspended during this fear process. The actions taken during these states are much more effective due to the altered state of mind and the hormones going through the individual; they are pre-programmed. The state of fear can last up to when the source of fear is gone, and the individual may not even be panicking, but just anxious enough that they do not ask the simple questions. This is exactly how people lose money on the stock market. Stocks are falling, so they run and try to “cut their losses.” That is, of course, a topic for another time; this is just to give you an example of how this creeping “fear” can damage a person while they may not be fully panicking. Fear has a time and a place. It is a superpower that unless controlled, will lead the person to jump off the cliff. THE FIGHT CONTINUES!

THE FIGHT CONTINUES! Puerto Rico se Levantara, Como Siempre! I was inspired by Alberto O. Cappas to pursue community activism, and I am absolutely inspired by participating in making a difference within our Latino/people of color community.  Since my renewal involvement, I have attended several meetings against gentrification in my lower west side community. I have rallied for affordable housing, tenant rights, an end to homelessness, and fighting for climate justice to save our planet from pollution and destruction. I remember January 27, 2020 very well, as it was my first protest of the year and I was very excited and not able to sleep. By 4:30 am, I was ready to go. It was a clear night. My block club vice-president was supposed to join me but did not. I picked up several youth PUSH members on my way to the meeting place. We met at School 77, everyone was there, waiting to leave for Albany to make our presence, to make noise. And by 5:50 am, we were on our way, together, in a Coach Bus. We made a pit stop in Rochester, NY, picked up more protesters there. We practiced chants, repeatedly, led by Geovanni Hernandez and Luz Velez. We arrived in Albany at 10:30 am, and everyone got off the bus, we followed one another into this giant, white building, known as the Capital building. We went through security, towards the million dollars staircase. We were all there, people from across New York State – from Buffalo, Grand Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Rochester, Syracuse, all the way from the Adirondacks, and we were demanding CLIMATE JUSTICE!  Led by our very own, community activist Luz Velez, hundreds of us sat there blocking the governor’s office main entrance, yelling, “Governor Cuomo, do your job!” Since then, I continue my community activism, I’m honored to be part of this movement, as I know that public discourse and protests, and rallies does make a big difference, and I’m very fortunate to be part of the solution, and not the problem. I’ve attended other protests this past month, lobbying for home guarantee, fighting for tenant and homeowner rights, more secure public housing, & an end to homelessness. We need to save the environment, we need to go solar, and we NEED to stop the FRACKING which is sucking the very blood out of our planet, causing destruction, pollution, and yes, earthquakes. Get involved in the right issues, help save the planet, if not for you, for our children, for our future generation.
