ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DISCOVER THE  PERSON I AM.

ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DISCOVER THE  PERSON I AM. I’ve done a lot of reflecting over the course of the past few months and in honor of pride, i’d like to reintroduce myself to everyone. my name is Vianca Barreto-Colón, and i am a bisexual woman. i am attracted to both men & woman alike and i have always felt this way.  it may come as a surprise to some and not as a surprise to others. either way, i am still very much myself, just a bit more honest. I’ve always struggled with my sexual identity, ever since i was a child, and being closeted has caused me much self hatred & grief. these past few months have been particularly hard as I’ve gone back and forth about coming out. i’ve been extremely worried about others perception of me, the relationships in my life, my mental and physical well being and so many other aspects of how coming out could change my life. and after much reflection, and much support from my beautiful, wonderful, ever loving family (Beatriz Flores,Jose Flores, Olga Barreto and my brother Victor). I’ve decided to come out, because it is a decision that is in the best interest of my heart, mind and spirit. I deserve to be happy with myself & my life and i deserve to love and be loved by whomever i so choose. and  whether you chose to see this as a personal attack against you, your beliefs, etc.. or choose to see this as an opportunity to get to know me at a more intimate level, that is up to you. i’m no longer making it my responsibility to appease friends or family. thank you for listening, and have the happiest of prides. Much love from your queer sister/daughter/granddaughter/cousin/friend/whatever… Read More From This Writer All Post Books Business Culture Education Entertainment Food Government Health Interviews Lower West Side Business & Economic Development Medical Military & Veterans Our Community Peace People Sports Who We Are ALLOWING PEOPLE TO DISCOVER THE  PERSON I AM. Beware of our Supermarkets: Price Gouging on the Lower West Side

Beware of our Supermarkets: Price Gouging on the Lower West Side Today’s economy has gotten ridiculous, especially on the lower west side. Supermarkets, store merchants and other businesses are raising their prices during this Coronavirus epidemic – guilty of price gouging! This is unacceptable!  It is not fair to those of us that cannot afford it, plain and simple. Let us compare Tops supermarket’s pricing the potato salad, a cost of $9.99. I can get it for a much lower price at the Price Rite supermarket on Elmwood, $2.39 for a 32 oz, the same at Walmart, only a 10 oz. difference. A pint of strawberries are close to $5.00, yet I can buy it at Price Rite or Walmart for $1.79. That is a big difference! Is this Tops supermarket’s strategy to limit the low-income customer from shopping there, to accommodate our higher income customers? This is, I am convinced, a product of gentrification, which is having a great impact in our lower West Side Puerto Rican/Latino community. I used to be a regular customer at Tops until I realized they were constantly raising prices, which is known as price gouging. The price gouging is well organized by management, raising product pricing on the first two weeks of the month when their lower income customers happen to receive their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). This is no coincidence, there is something wrong with this picture? This price gouging must stop, it is not fair to our low-income people that are struggling monthly to make ends meet, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic. While there is no federal law against this practice, price gouging is against the law in New York State. I will continue to research this issue. Price gouging is a serious and inhumane practice. I will look at other food establishments and compare product pricing, to determine if price gouging is taking place or practiced during this Coronavirus epidemic. Unfortunately, there are no laws against the casual price gouging. While consumers may feel that gouging prices is unfair, the free market system that is used in the United States has made it illegal for the Government to demand that merchants keep their prices below a certain amount. It is up to the community to choose to not purchase any items in a store that is gouging prices, but there is no legal action they can take. Merchants will usually gouge prices on things when the supply of those items are limited. Tops Supermarket consumers or customers in the lower West Side are not your average middle or high middle-class customer. A large number receive some form of public assistance to complement their income. _________________________________________ As of January 2019, 34 states have laws against price-gouging. New York State is one of them. The governor is encouraging all New Yorkers who observe or are a victim of price gouging to report these occasions. By the Push of a Police Officer

By the Push of a Police Officer This humble community servant was asked to say a few words to Univision International about Martin Gugino, the PUSH Member and long-time community activist who was recently hospitalized due to a head injury suffered for all the world to see as he stood up in a Black Lives Matter rally! Martin was videoed walking up to police officers, who for reasons unknown to us, pushed this 75- year-old man to the ground where he sustained his injuries! Though the Police Department claimed he tripped, video clearly shows he was pushed! Consequently the 2 officers were fired and were arrested and charged. They are awaiting their day in court but at least Mr Gugino (Marty) is still alive, unlike George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Gardner, and Buffalo’s own, India Cummings, Rafael “Pito” Rivera, and John Hernandez Rossy.  I told Univision’s reporter how Martin was a stand up gentleman who used his live-time experience to help uplift people and involved himself in causes he believed in! He knew he had more clout and privilege than this little old Latina woman. He joined and supported our community through PUSH (PEOPLE UNITED FOR SUSTAINABLE HOUSING) rally and demonstrations locally, and in Albany, for housing and climate justice against environmental racism and other systemic inequalities that plague our Black and Latino communities.  I am sure the police thought this tragic and unnecessary event would go unnoticed, overshadowed by other events in the rally. But this is more than about one man being abused by police; it is 400 years of systematic racism, oppression, and abuse against black and brown people, perpetuated by a system built to do exactly what it does: control people, kill and destroy families, and incarcerate men of color. We need economic systems to be built, equity to be made, good sustainable green jobs to exist and be available to front-line communities affected by systemic racism. There is too much government interference where communities cannot purchase good homes, where there is no quality education, no quality air, no quality food, no quality health — a total breakdown in the quality of public and private service. Black Lives Matter: Too many people refuse to accept that BLACK LIVES MATTER, an attitude of a government with an arrogance and racism that has existed for hundreds of years, and perhaps, it will take just as long to eradicate!  People must organize and use their expertise to solve and fight against walls built to keep people of color in place. Historically, they have used and applied an injustice system to incarcerate and lock-up our people in their concentration prisons. Let us stop pretending COVID19 is the major concern in communities of color. In addition to this virus, our people are confronted with poverty, poor health condition, substance abuse/use, high unemployment, and a lack of education. All these elements combined creates a pipeline that feeds our Black and Latino people to mass incarceration with no chance of parole or special treatment, as unlike Manifort who was released so he will not be exposed to the Coronavirus. How about the degraded Congressman Chris Collins, who is still waiting to serve his jail term at his convenience? White Privilege: The use of force and violence is quite different when applying to the Black and White community. You can clearly see the double standards. For example, when the young white man shot up the all Black church, he was apprehended without any violence. He was safe and alive in the hands of police officers. The same occurred when the armed white men stormed and occupied the first floor of the governor’s building in protest of Coronavirus restrictions; there was no blood shed. Let one Black or person of color show up armed, they would have been killed in a heartbeat, no questions asked. Yes, we know there is a double standard; we know it, and Martin knew it. To accept it without questioning and fighting for the change long overdue is defeat. We have bowed down long enough! I will stand with all people who recognize that if we cannot accept that ”BLACK LIVES MATTER too, or these folks can’t say it, then we must accept that they are showing us their true racist side, and we must fight for Black Lives Matters. A better life is at stake for those who are brave and seek the change that is way overdue!
