WE NEED PEACE IN UKRAINE WE’RE ALL AFFECTED!!

“Que lastima que tengamos esta gran Guerra en Ucrania!! And we are all affected by it!” We are afflicted by the significantly increasing danger of Nuclear War and annihilation. Nuclear winter is now more likely than ever (and we’ve had devastatingly close calls before); The Doomsday Clock is now 90 seconds to Midnight: a worldwide grain shortage and associated shortages, the environmental catastrophes caused by the military activity; and the opportunity cost of vast money and efforts being poured into the terrible devastation and destruction. Please join us to vigil for Peace In Ukraine on Saturday, Sept 7, 12 Noon to 1 pm: Bidwell & Elmwood, Buffalo 14222. The gathering is organized by the WNY Peace Center and hosted by Women In Black WNY. Please bring signs! As members of the Peace In Ukraine Coalition, we call for: 1.  an immediate ceasefire. 2.  peace negotiations; and 3. an end to providing more weapons. Yes, Russia was so wrong in invading and has acted abominably. However, so has the USA!! The expansion of NATO despite US assurances to the contrary has posed military and nuclear threats to Russia. How would the US respond to Russian alliances with our neighbors Mexico or Canada? At least 15 countries were added to NATO, bringing the threat of military confrontation close to Russia. This added to Putin’s already apparent proclivity to aggression – with the war in Ukraine, at least in part, the result.  Now we have the two countries holding the vast majority of the world’s nuclear weapons locked in a proxy war and showing no inclination to diplomacy or negotiations.  The environmental impact of the war is terrible. Fighting has caused huge forest fires, devastation at Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, and a massive number of bombed-out buildings. Furthermore, greenhouse gas emissions – said by Ukraine to be 33 million tons – from the war are astronomical. The opportunity cost of the $75 Billion (yes $75 Billion) being spent by the US on the war in Ukraine includes all the efforts that could have otherwise been undertaken. That figure includes US spending on military, financial, and humanitarian efforts in the war. How much could $75 Billion otherwise do to improve life on this planet? In the book “How to Spend $75 Billion to Make the World a Better Place,” economists showed even $12 Billion in nutrition support could reduce child under-nutrition by 36%l each $1 spent producing $59 in benefits (Limburg, Huff Post, 2013). Or $75 Billion could double the budget of 125 cities the size of Buffalo – or provide substantial funds for housing, healthcare, education – you name it. That’s #moneyforpeoplesneeds!!!  The US has refused to negotiate this ferocious proxy war, as has the Ukraine. Please come to the vigil on 10/7 (see above).  ask our reps and senators why they haven’t supported legislation requiring Biden’s administration to report on war strategy and use diplomacy; and urge our elected to push for a ceasefire, negotiations, and no more weapons. OUR LATINO HERITAGE IS AROUND YEAR-ROUND!

We are one of the biggest family there is!  To be Latina or Latino ….  and then some, as you know us Latinos, if we love you, you are family! We know English; we choose to speak our way and break away from the colonialism that is their English, even if it’s for this month!! Happy Latin Month (“Hispanic” is the name the Colonizers chose to call us; all Latinos have a choice as to what to answer to; I will not be “labeled” by their colloquialisms!  This is the first real lesson to learn during Latino Heritage Month! Recognize that many people who are self-aware choose to be addressed by our (the) name that is more self-reflective of our collective identities (as Latinas and Latinos) or the place we come from, our homeland known as Boricua, or Puerto Rico.    The same applies to other Latin American countries, to know your heritage roots, such as Dominicanos, Cubanos, Venezolanos, Mejicanos, etc.  So, felicidades to all my Latinas and Latinos this month! To all who love their cultural roots. We are fun-loving, hard-loving people, especially once you understand where we are coming from and why we do, say, or take offense to things we feel passionate about!  So, if it’s been a while, make sure to touch someone Latin, get together with an old Latina or Latina friend, go out, and have a good old time! I miss seeing a lot of you all, and I hope if health permits, I would love to play catch-up (not ketchup or catsup); there are three colloquial words for condiments; choose one already!   Hahahaha… Por favor, enjoy being or making a new memory with us! New York State: THE LATINOS NOBODY KNOWS

Note: Survey results are unsurprising because we have few influential Latina/o leaders. Many of those surveyed didn’t want to name someone because they knew it was “bullst.” Our leadership’s emphasis on “prominence” overpower, persistent disunity, and service as adjuncts to liberal white supremacy has weakened any real movement for social justice.  Influence is not power but proximity to those who really hold power. That, in a nutshell, is the saga of the jurist LaSalle nomination. The fact that you have Jay-Lo and Mayor Adams (non-Latino) on the survey reveals that those views reflected more “name recognition” than any influence. But they make the “City & State” Magazine list of “influential.” LOL. This is how “Politico” makes fun of us by placing J.Lo on the list, a silly preposition used to garner “hits.” A reflection of the realities of the petite bourgeoisie of a colonized and despised people mentally enchained by a colonial mentality so eloquently captured in Frantz Fanon’s classic work “The Wretched of the Earth.”  Take a minute to read the survey https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5c8e392a94d71a16ff940402/t/64de586110496266c8fc4333/1692293218226/Latino_Poll_Results.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0HWkYqQQlL7nBWBQz2IzgHO3K6TtJQLTqTwL0G2fvF-7RxkEJkJF5gmpI  Political Playbook:  JENNIFER LOPEZ FOR MAYOR? Nearly half of Latino voters in New York couldn’t — or didn’t want to — name an influential Latino leader in the state. Among those that could, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the most frequently named, with 15 percent, followed by Rep. Adriano Espaillat with 7 percent, and Mayor Eric Adams (who isn’t Latino) at 3 percent. And entertainer Jennifer Lopez at 2.5 percent. That’s according to a survey out Monday by BSP Research, commissioned by the Latino-owned Hamilton Campaign Network. “The main highlight is how little awareness Latinos have of elected officials in general. And Latino elected officials in particular,” the firm’s founding partner, Luis Miranda, said.  He said the losing battle over getting Hector LaSalle on the state’s highest court was one motive for the poll, not to mention all the punditry about what New York Latinos want; good data don’t back that. And 90% want to see more Latinos appointed to high positions. Both Democrats and Republicans could do better to win over Latinos. Miranda said the poll shows: “It’s between benign neglect and hostility.” — Jeff Coltin  https://www.politico.com/newsletters/new-york-playbook/2023/09/11/adams-real-budget-crisis-is-here-00114966 Read More From This Writer All Post Art Books & Poems Business Community Education Entertainment español Food & Culture Health Interviews Military & Veterans Peace People Politics Sports New York State: THE LATINOS NOBODY KNOWS October 1, 2023/No Comments Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.
