THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION

THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION Why do we need knowledge and how do we utilize education? What is the importance of knowledge and education? Ask a couple of five-year old kids and they will say “to become smart” or to be someone famous! As cute as it sounds, there is a lot more truth to just becoming smart or becoming famous. Knowledge is a way to gain necessary information and applying it. It is a tool to further your education. It is an instrument to get out of “the box.” Knowledge is Power! Knowledge is information that your brain stores so that when you question or try to understand things, you will have the appropriate answers and awareness to situations, events and problems. Knowledge is the ability to develop solutions by way of making sense of things, but there’s more, a lot more that becomes Education as the sum of all the knowledge you store for years and years throughout one’s life. The point is to utilize this education to make a positive difference. It’s really about growth and self-development. So how do we gain Knowledge and education? Let’s start with people. When we talk with and hear people, we are getting knowledge about them. When we are invited to a conversation, we gain a better understanding about someone and the situation. Whether it’s a conversation, or personal news, at the end of it, we know a little more than we did when we began. The best part is the learning process. Knowledge is an event that is learned. Education is also a learning experience. Traditionally, we go to school and we learn facts, figures and equations. This is the knowledge we learn to get an education. Ask another five-year old what Education is, and they will most likely say “Education is school.” So really, Knowledge and education go hand in hand, but the learning experience is everything you collect and store in your brain which becomes your way of thinking. From your way of thinking comes your way of life and it all goes back to your way of collecting knowledge, which becomes your education. What you learn, collect and store, is the importance you put on your knowledge and education, because education is not only about going to school, but how you apply your learning and knowledge to life. Obtaining knowledge and education is not hard nor is it impossible because one learns every day. How you utilize the knowledge you gain is the knowledge which eventually becomes your education! Its importance is based solely on YOU! I hope you understand that the importance of Knowledge and Education is YOU! CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: YOU MATTER!

Civic engagement is the banner of democratic participation at the Parkway Central Library in Philadelphia. The Free Library of Philadelphia’s mission and vision keeps expanding with addition to their new democratic space.  The Parkway Central Library is a majestic building for all: residents, visitors, returning citizens and homeless Philadelphians. It is not just a library! It is a democratic community that serves all. I have become a regular at the library as I seek to rejuvenate both my brain and spirit. I have had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy book presentations, use their career job seeking center as well as learn through historical presentations from civil rights issues to cartography.  On April 12th, 2019 the Parkway Library opened new spacing in which civic engagement continues to flourish.  As many municipalities prepared themselves to run democratic primaries, I urge everyone to find out where your local legislator and or school board candidate stand on the issue of continued funding for libraries and community engagement. Take a moment and find out who is running in your district, what their agenda and most importantly where do she/he stands on public education, adult literacy, ESL literacy and resources for new Americans. Visit your local library and find out what funding deficit does it have? What are the new programs your community can benefit from? Support all and every endeavor by your local library.  I leave you with two magnificent pictures of the People’s Literacy Haven: The Free Library of Philadelphia on the Parkway. COMPUTERS AND GENERATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES Part 2

COMPUTERS AND GENERATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES Part 2 In my previous article, I talked about how technology, which is most mainstream at the time, is what makes kids of that generation the most competent at it, in general. We also briefly discussed some outliers and the important point which is: Just because you did not grow up with that technology, it does not mean you cannot be competent, or even one of the best people with that technology. There is a sense of dread with how fast technology has been advancing in the past 30 years. However, as it advanced in the tech industry, the question of ‘user-friendliness and ease of learning’, became a major question that is even studied under the computer science subject, human-computer interaction. That is because, even those at the cutting edge of the tech industry, struggle to keep up while end-users are completely left in the dust otherwise. It was easy to discover that just because something is powerful, does not mean it has to be esoteric. Those that are esoteric, are always taken over things that are much easier to use. We can thank the free markets for that. Fortunately, the popular technology often passes this litmus test, and the main obstacle that the older generation faces is often nothing more than a mental barrier against the new technology. I have been fortunate enough to be on all sides of this situation. In the past, and when it comes to any technology, as soon as you figure out the logic behind the basics, nothing is stopping you from grasping it in full. The kids of that age were not anything special. With your own life experiences, if you do not erect a mental barrier around the problem, it is much easier not to only grasp it, but to go even further and expand one’s horizons through grasping that new piece of technology. Examples of this are out there, so go out and fear not the unknown, for there is no shame in learning, but there is shame in willful ignorance.
