Municipal elections are taking place in many cities across the nation from New York to Philadelphia! This is a call to action as citizens and members of the collective — your vote is your voice, register to vote and make civic engagement part of your daily life. What quality of life issues do you care about? How is the local funding in your school district calculated? Do you know what is the vision and mission of the Sheriff’s Office in your city? Who is running for the seat? Why is the candidate running? What about City Council? How is your district represented? What issues is your district facing? Mayor? Public Advocate? District Attorney?  How does the office affect your daily life as a member of the collective? As an individual? It all starts with your registration to vote and taking the time to exercise such amazing privilege. Perhaps, you might consider running? Take a moment and sit with yourself and firmly reflect on these questions. Elaborate on your answers. Tell your story.   Why are you running? What is your motivation and vision for the office you are seeking? Sit with yourself and articulate openly why are you seeking to become a public servant. Why this or that office? Are you ready to win? Do you have a clear message? Does it resonate with your district and or office you are seeking? Have you enlisted your spouse/partner/family in the decision? Have you taken the time to talk and seek the support of your loyal friends?  Voters are also family members, spouses, partners and friends…your humanity comes across with voters. Do you have a support system? What support do you have? What is your platform? Are you an insurgent? Where is your base? Do you need a base? Have you emotionally, spiritually and financially done an assessment of where you are…what would it take? Public service is a noble calling. It is about building and representing communities across the board. It is about transparency and advocacy. It is for the determined and courageous. Few months ago, I ran into an amazing young man who runs a community development corporation in the city, I was so happy to see him. I told him how great he will be as an elected official! He firmly and politely said: “I am not corrupt enough to be elected.” His utterance is unfortunately a common perception among many hard working and honest citizens. Not all politicians are corrupt, and not all seek office for self-gain. There are many amazing, truly committed community minded candidates who seek office to represent with honor, integrity and for the public good. More than ever, we need to work on common ground and work together to elect public servants who are willing to work with community members and stakeholders to build and govern with integrity. Take a moment– consider the calling either as a candidate and/or a supporter. You matter, your community and city matter. Register and Vote. COMPUTERS AND GENERATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

COMPUTERS AND GENERATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES In the past few generations, we have had a curious phenomenon that many talked about individually but not as a whole and that is how a generation grows up with a certain technology that defined their childhood-early adulthood and becomes very proficient at it and not the one next and last then proceeds to praise or complain about the next generation is so good/bound by it. This is something that came to my attention when I would help the previous generation struggle with computers while myself having very little idea on how to fix cars and this tends to be the general trend for most millennials. Especially the ones who have not grown up in the States where the entire culture of people could be defined by cars they drove and got familiar with. Similarly, to how the Boomers to Gen X generations grew up with cars, the millennial grew up with computers and since they were so exposed to them in their youth, they picked it up as their view into the technical world. This is no excuse to understand either technology enough to use it. For a while, I believed the first half of the paragraph more than I should have, as this was the reason other generations did not understand those technologies but that was until I met one of the best system administrators I have ever seen. A 65-year-old Linux wizard from Fredonia taught us Linux commands and system administrating. He was originally an electrical engineer which is quite distant from computer science and got into computers when he was 45. Conversely, my cousin who makes a living administering a popular game server got into cars as well as many millennials including myself after getting my first one. Turns out that as soon as you drop the bias that “It is Generation (insert generation here) thing” it becomes much clearer that the technology we are talking about is simple because the principles of the systems stay the same, the best systems are the simplest ones. Sure, when you get into the nitty-gritty and combine them, they become complicated but after understanding the underlying principles they simply become just complicated instead of impossible. Hence, I would like to invite everyone when you encounter a piece of technology you do not understand, do not be ashamed, for there is no shame in learning but there is shame in willful ignorance as says the Russian proverb. CALL TO ACTION – CREATING COMMUNITY-BASED CAPACITY BUILDING

CALL TO ACTION – CREATING COMMUNITY-BASED CAPACITY BUILDING The recent federal government shutdown has highlighted the imperative need for community activists to continue to work on capacity building and to create viable coalitions across the Nation and the global community. We build communities not Walls. Our hard work edifies communities across the Nation and throughout the world. Money wiring to Latin America and throughout the world to immigrant communities have and continue to create domestic growth and economic opportunity. We have built communities and endure being victims of violent crime, systemic racism and public institutional neglect. There is an economic and banking crisis looming at our doorstep. A crisis fabricated and sustained by the erosion of regulatory protection of consumers, farmers and small businesses. The time is ripe, and we have standing to address the issues we are facing from the adverse impact of the shut down to the need of addressing true criminal justice reform. The American Dream has left us and for many of us in our respective immigrant and Latino communities, the dream has never been obtainable as systemic failures in how elected officials and the federal government have neglected public institutions and public programs that seek to serve us. This is a crucial and defining moment in our identity as Americans of Latino descent in the United States and as members of the global village.  The current social and political climate calls for organizing block by block and to demand action and accountability from our elected representatives. If our call to action are left unheard and dismissed, let us mobilize and register to vote, with the goal of getting the vote out. The tide needs and must be turned around! Mere complaining and or making a reference to the systemic racism and backlash we have and continue to endure are not working. Build yourself first and while in the process take a moment and encourage a neighbor and a fellow citizen to become part of the civic fabric. Our past defines us as people who come into neighborhoods and areas crime ridden and poor and with our vision and ingenuity, we develop boulevards of prosperity. The present is here, and it is ours and of our brothers and sisters who are also striving for better public institutions for their children and communities. We are all connected and affected by the social, educational and political crisis our nation is facing. We are all impacted by it.  Sit with yourself and courageously take a step towards your self-edification, become an agent of social change. The future is now, Juntos Podemos!
