 THE IMMIGRANTS ARE COMING, THE IMMIGRANTS ARE COMING This is the new era of the immigrants entering the United States! I have noticed a drastic difference between then and now, here in Buffalo, New York. Nationalities I’ve never even heard of, such as, Mandarin, is totally new to me. I decided to investigate, conduct research on the subject. Here is my first article on the subject: More will come, as I intend to learn more about the immigration problem — curious of the statistics at hand, statistics here in the U.S.A., and other countries. In absolute numbers, the United States has a larger immigrant population than any other country, with 47 million as of 2015.   The U.S. foreign born population reached 47 million, and is predicted to reach 78 million, there are twenty Metropolitan areas with the longest number of immigrants. Wow, now that is a lot!  According to the 2016 immigrant statistics, the U.S. admitted 1.18 million legal Immigrants. Of these, 48% were immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, 20% were family-sponsored, 13% refugee, and asylum seekers, 12% were employment based preference, 4.2% were part of Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, persons admitted under the Nicaraguan, and Central American Relief Act, children born subsequent to the issuance of a parent’s Visa, and certain parolees from the from Soviet Union, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, who were denied refugee status. 1.4% were victims of a crime, or their family members, and 1.0% who were granted the Special Immigrant Visa, (SIV) for Iraqis, and Afghans employed by U.S. government. The remaining 0.4%, including 0.2% who were ranted suspension or deportation, as an immigrant relative of a citizen. As for our good neighbor across the border, Canada’s popularity is the immigrants’ preferred destination. It has been increasing over the past two decades, with a total of 303,257 immigrants coming to the country in 2018. This figure has minimized, since 2016, when about 323,190 immigrants came to Canada, which is more than the estimated 199,170 immigrants in 2003. With this extreme population of immigrants, could the U.S. become over-populated in the future?  It’s a wonder why President Trump is trying to control the number of people crossing our borders. A LETTER TO OUR COMMUNITY: OUR CLIMATE, AN EFFORT TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHANGE

Climate change is affecting everyone worldwide, from floods, super storms, heatwaves and all types of disasters never seen with such intensities before.  Buffalo is not immune. A group of community leaders this past summer won the most aggressive climate justice in New York State and in the nation. Many in our communities, unfortunately, are oblivious to what it means to the everyday Michael or Miguel. It’s important to know, because we as frontline communities (communities of all color, low income, etc.…), are the people usually impacted by climate pollution the most. This pollution is transformed in the worst health disparities in our communities. It  has  the worse level of asthma, respiratory problems, and other medical problems by way of where we live, and in the proximity of where corporate polluters have their companies, and how they practice their environmental carbon footprint, or how they reduce their carbon emissions and waste products in our cities. We need to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050, or sooner within the next 10 years if we are to advert a worldwide catastrophe. I wish it was sooner rather than later! We need to switch from extractive fossil fuel to a more renewable reusable solar, wind, geothermal, energies that will save us billions of dollars. If we did, it will stimulate the creation of new jobs, for retraining of fossil fuel workforce, green sustainability livable wages, new job markets that will prioritize frontline people to be trained and open job opportunities. By 2030, if we can invest 50% emission reduction, via changing the way corporations change the way they do business, by using new and cleaner energy efficient, reducing pollutants, and other strategies. Our planning committee members are working with groups such as the NY RENEWS (labor and environmental coalition), our local PUSH BUFFALO, and other state and national affiliates. Our local and state effort has taken notice on a national level; Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep Ilhan Omar, and Senator Bernie Sanders, have heard of our work regarding “Climate Justice and Homes Guarantee/Housing is a Human Rights”, and have publicly acknowledged our movement and hard work. Our work and effort are being recognized on a national level, yet, not in our own local communities, and that is tragic! The public needs to know about our work and effort, that we are doing everything possible, and to our human capabilities, to protect families regarding their personal interest in fair housing, fair rent, maintaining our communities intact, and to make sure that our quality of life and health is maintained and preserved – now and for a secure future for your children’s, for our next generation; and to safeguard this movement, we need to be heard, and to be heard, we need community support. RESPECTING EACH OTHER: AVOIDING NEGATIVE SPEECH Negative speech can be disastrous. As there are examples in human history where thousands and even millions of people can be misled. I believe that by raising awareness and implementing positive influence in our behavior, our humanity, and mankind can avoid negative pitfalls and not repeat previous world conflicts. I was motivated to speak out or discuss this issue as it pertains to current events that we face every day. I begin by defining a few terms as they pertain to the concept of Globalization, which is simply the way that countries and people of the world interact and integrate, combining and becoming whole (one). Though this is not particularly a new concept, the idea of respecting each other’s culture as we assimilate needs constant attention. Assimilation occurs when there is a minority group that begins to resemble a dominant/main group, assuming the values, behaviors, and beliefs of that dominant population. This is very evident in today’s ever-growing cultural, social, and economic “melting pot”, as we witness the slimming of separation of various cultures, such as the case of occurring globalization. How often have we heard the cliché statement, “We live in a small world after all”, a foreshadowing of how closely all human beings relate to one another. Unfortunately, there are those in power that can or do use, in my opinion, this beautiful conceptual life truth to adversely affect a group or groups of people, using derogatory terms, in describing other cultures. This easily allows distraction, separation, misinformation, and consequently, unwarranted hateful feelings toward one another. This is the clinical point of this piece; despite what words are being promoted or circulated, we must remain united in respecting our cultural differences or diversity and our core human value system. No one deserves to be slandered.
