ELEVEN TERMS AFFECTING OUR LIVES

ELEVEN TERMS AFFECTING OUR LIVES This is a list of some of the terms active in the political world. I chose them randomly in hopes that it clears the air on some political jargon that you come across without giving any thought to their origin. This is a brief overview; go online, look them up, and learn more about our political world. Demagogue – This is when a political leader seeks support without using rational judgment but rather appeals to popular desires and prejudices. Donald Trump is a classic example of this practice.  Filibuster: In legislative practice, the parliamentary tactic used in the United States Senate by a minority of the senators-sometimes even a single senator-to delay or prevent parliamentary action by talking so long that the majority either grants concessions or withdraws the bill. For example, presently, this is the practice the Republicans will use to put a stop to the “Voting Right Bill” sponsored by the Democrats. Gaffe: An unintentional act or remark causing embarrassment to its originator; a blunder. Gerrymandering – Gerrymandering is a practice intended to establish an unfair political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating the boundaries of electoral districts. In Buffalo, Puerto Ricans/Latinos are victims of this practice. G.O.P.  – This is an acronym for Grand Old Party, referring to the Republican Party. Hard money: Used in conjunction with federal elections. These funds must be raised in accordance with the regulations set out by the FEC. Hard money is not able to be donated by unions or corporations directly but has to come from individuals. A corporation can, however, make contributions through political action committees. As of 2012, an individual may only donate a maximum of $2,700 USD. Hard money may be spent on political adverts and campaigns for a particular candidate. Purple state: Another term for a swing state. A state which could vote Democratic (blue) or Republican (red). SuperPAC – An independent political action committee that may raise unlimited sums of money from corporations, unions, and individuals but is not permitted to contribute to or coordinate directly with parties or candidates. Xenophobia/Xenophobic — An intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries and cultures. Wedge issue:  a political issue that divides a candidate’s supporters or the members of a party. Political campaigns use wedge issues to soften tension within a targeted population. A wedge issue may often be a point of internal dissent within an opposing party, which that party attempts to suppress or ignore discussion because it divides “the base”. Wonk: An elected official who takes an enthusiastic or excessive interest in the specialized details of a particular subject or field, especially political policy. Education

EDUCATION: HOW WE GOT IT BACKWARDS

I am yet to see a politician that will not preach the importance of education; equally, I am yet to see a politician advocate for a proper living wage for teachers. That is not including their private tutors in their family mansion, but I digress… For decades the educational problem of our nation has been the butt of jokes around the globe. The general education levels of course are not a problem for a society that has no intention of advancing into the future, and the bill for this mistake does not come due much later until a crisis occurs. Now, thanks to our nation abandoning education, we have people who can barely speak English as their first and only language, and my favorite, refusing to do things actual scientists tell them to do. Certainly, Science can be wrong (scientific method depends on that fact), but the chances of someone with proper data, and research on similar past circumstances, is much lower than Billy who believes birds are government drones because a funny man on YouTube told him so. There have been some things that have been done to remedy these problems, charter schools, for example, have their self problems that can be a topic of another article.  Is it a surprise when you pay master’s to graduate teachers barely enough to survive that they are more likely to quit the profession altogether? Looking at the teacher shortages around the country and the horror stories we hear from teachers, It is no wonder! Why would any sane person go to college for at least 6 years, incur tens of thousands in debt and then go to a profession where they are not valued in pay or treatment? That is just a recipe for societal decline and the biggest victims are the people who need education the most. As the same politicians who are pocketing trillions say: “The best way to get out of poverty is education.” What we are providing those people is a travesty. For next month, I will be interviewing a teacher that has had experience with teaching in the Bronx, and in New York State in teaching in general. Community, Education

A note to our Buffalo & Erie County Community: “LATINOS AT THE TABLE”

I have always served my community, and I have the history to share with Buffalo. I am well versed and informed on social and political issues. This experience has taken me to other parts of the country speaking on local, state, and federal issues. I am pleased with the development of the Latino Speaking Bureau, it gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge, information, and journey with our young people in the college and university communities. My many years of community involvement has prepared me for the challenge, a challenge to educate young minds of things they cannot learn in the classroom. I am confident, bold, and articulate with my subject matters. With the Latino Speakers Bureau, there is now no need for the inner circle or status quo to handpick their favorite speaker or consultant, but an opportunity to book Latino speakers from a pool of the best for your event or conference. I have worked on the west side since the 1980s, dedicating my professional career to the growth of the Puerto Rican community, socially and politically; taking a break in 2003 to recuperate from a long-time illness. But I never retired. During my so-called “break”, I aligned myself to the PUSH organization, an organization involved in creating affordable housing and fighting gentrification. My association with PUSH gave birth to PUSH Silver (giving the elders a voice). I strongly believe that we have to give a voice to our story and not wait for others to rewrite our story to fit their needs or agenda.  My life has really been a great journey, bringing me the Puerto Rican-Latino Committee, PUSH, Hispanic United of Buffalo, Buffalo Latino Village, and my political campaigning to help Latinos get elected to public office; and using the PUSH platform, I have travelled outside Buffalo and the state, going on a speaking tour addressing issues such climate change, gentrification, affordable housing, Systematic Racism, and protecting the environment. I have over forty years of travelling on this planet, working with people who truly want to make a difference in the quality of life for all Americans – Black, White, Latino, Asian, etc. As a woman, I look forward to the Speakers Bureau promoting the strong  Latina leadership to address the  role they have played in our community, especially the leadership displayed by the Latina Woman’s League Thanks to the Buffalo Latino Speakers Bureau, I hope our local public and private sector, including our colleges and universities, will reach out and book us to tell our story, to educate you, and to share our experience and information about the reality of Puerto Ricans/Latinos in Buffalo, NY. Have an event or conference coming up, support diversity, and book one of our Latina speakers. Email us at latinospeakers@gmail.com.
