CHRISTIAN PARRA & COMPANY FOUND WAY TO HELP DURING THE CORONAVIRUS

CHRISTIAN PARRA. As always, you find this young man out there in the street, in the community working to make life better for our communities. If you don’t know Parra, you should! He is the founder of PUSHING Latinos Forward and the Peoples’ Machine, as well as a member of the Puerto Rican/Latino Committee, and a ‘guest writer’ for the Buffalo Latino Village. He recently worked for the PUSH organization, leaving to work with the Citizens Action organization. He called me during the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis (this past month, March), early on a Saturday afternoon to see if I had a list of senior citizens that needed help or food. He explained that there were “too many senior citizens living alone and isolated, and we need to identify them and get to them with food and any assistance we can provide. We just can’t stay home”, he said. He, along with a group of young men and women, and assisted by his partner, Geovaira Hernandez, a Latina who is becoming well-known throughout the state for her work with climate change and environmental issues. A fundraising apparatus was organized, including social media, Facebook, and PayPal, plus direct donations. With the help of their community contacts, the group was able to go shopping for food, and have teams to make food deliveries.  They organized the project into several steps, the first was the purchase of carts; phase two was the preparation of individual care packages, and phase three was the delivery of the food to the elders and large families in the community. They even called me to see if I needed anything, seeing that my wife and I are both senior citizens, but with God’s blessing, we were ok and did not need anything. According to Parra, this effort “will continue until this Coronavirus crisis is over. We can still use support and donation so we can continue. Please help us help our senior citizen community. If you want to donate, go to Paypal or https://www.paypal.com/paypalme2/helpbuffalofunds. All the money goes directly for food. We are all volunteers, doing this for free, and we feel very good about it, knowing that we are fulfilling a vital role during the time of need.” Parra said he was grateful that many came to help, which includes Adam Bojak is running for NYS Assemblyman in the 149th NYS Assembly District. Other helpers include Eric Antony Maldonado, Avi, and Keith. For information: christianparra113@gmail.com. THE FIGHT CONTINUES!

THE FIGHT CONTINUES! Puerto Rico se Levantara, Como Siempre! I was inspired by Alberto O. Cappas to pursue community activism, and I am absolutely inspired by participating in making a difference within our Latino/people of color community.  Since my renewal involvement, I have attended several meetings against gentrification in my lower west side community. I have rallied for affordable housing, tenant rights, an end to homelessness, and fighting for climate justice to save our planet from pollution and destruction. I remember January 27, 2020 very well, as it was my first protest of the year and I was very excited and not able to sleep. By 4:30 am, I was ready to go. It was a clear night. My block club vice-president was supposed to join me but did not. I picked up several youth PUSH members on my way to the meeting place. We met at School 77, everyone was there, waiting to leave for Albany to make our presence, to make noise. And by 5:50 am, we were on our way, together, in a Coach Bus. We made a pit stop in Rochester, NY, picked up more protesters there. We practiced chants, repeatedly, led by Geovanni Hernandez and Luz Velez. We arrived in Albany at 10:30 am, and everyone got off the bus, we followed one another into this giant, white building, known as the Capital building. We went through security, towards the million dollars staircase. We were all there, people from across New York State – from Buffalo, Grand Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, Rochester, Syracuse, all the way from the Adirondacks, and we were demanding CLIMATE JUSTICE!  Led by our very own, community activist Luz Velez, hundreds of us sat there blocking the governor’s office main entrance, yelling, “Governor Cuomo, do your job!” Since then, I continue my community activism, I’m honored to be part of this movement, as I know that public discourse and protests, and rallies does make a big difference, and I’m very fortunate to be part of the solution, and not the problem. I’ve attended other protests this past month, lobbying for home guarantee, fighting for tenant and homeowner rights, more secure public housing, & an end to homelessness. We need to save the environment, we need to go solar, and we NEED to stop the FRACKING which is sucking the very blood out of our planet, causing destruction, pollution, and yes, earthquakes. Get involved in the right issues, help save the planet, if not for you, for our children, for our future generation. “IN HONOR OF ABBY” BUTTERFLY BALL: ABBY’S PROMISE

“IN HONOR OF ABBY” BUTTERFLY BALL: ABBY’S PROMISE “To honor Abby Soto, who wanted to help others, by financially assisting college-bound students; alleviating financial stress of families of pediatric cancer patients; and supporting head and neck cancer research.” Life was celebrated with joy and tenderness at The Butterfly Ball held by Abby’s Promise  in memory of the fierce and beautiful spirit of Abby Soto. I had the privilege and honor of being part of this year’s Ball and in partaking in the foundation’s mission,  “To honor Abby Soto”, who wanted to help others, by financially assisting college-bound students; alleviating financial stress of families of pediatric cancer patients; and supporting head and neck cancer research. As a member of a socially conscious and progressive community and tribe, I am very proud to have experienced the work and the commitment of Patricia Bonilla, an event planner and foundation member — working to make Abby’s promise come to life. Abby’s spirit was there smiling, walking through and embracing loved ones and friends united for cancer pediatric patients. Let me introduce you to Abby and who she was and what her spirit represented and represents today. Please take a moment, check the work being done with love, and grace through Abby’sPromise.Org. Their work is amazing, here is their touching tribute to Abby: “Our precious Abby is resting in peace. She fought cancer for nearly 1.5 years with such grace and strength, promising herself to smile every day. She never complained and was optimistic even when she knew that God had other plans. Many people don’t accomplish what she did in 18 years. She liked trying different things and she tried many different sports. She was always up for a challenge, and never allowed anyone to tell her she couldn’t do something. Abby was always independent and committed to her education. She loved writing and was so brilliant. She was very excited when she received college acceptances, four with full scholarships. She was selfless, always thinking of others. Simply put, she was the perfect, purest soul, and she is already guiding us to make a difference. Abby will live forever in our hearts. I am urging our community of writers and artists to get in touch with the foundation and to make donations for their programs of books and artwork. I was very touched by the beautiful activity table at the Ball for children to express their creativity. Please support their amazing initiatives and Abby’s amazing spirit!
