EDIFICANDO COMUNIDAD A TRAVES DE LAS REDES SOCIALIS: FRANCISCO MELANIE (For images mentioned in this article, go to June 2021 issue, page 5) Las redes sociales se han convertido en un vehiculo para crear y edificar comunidades localmente y globalmente. Hace unas semanas atras, enconte varias publicaciones de un joven artista de origen dominicano- Francisco Nunez en Twitter junto a los Tweets de la Melanie Korach, una maestra poetisa oruinda de Canada. Ellos dos se han convertido en los arquitectos de una comunidad de edificadores y educadores de una comunidad global de la cual yo soy alumna. Francisco en su cuenta de Twitter comparte no solo palabras de aliento y espiritualidad sino una sensibilidad artistica incredible! El plasma su alma a traves de pinturas, artesania y arte de ajuar ( en ingles wearable art). Melanie a su vez, escribe y comparte poemas y vivencias desde todos los puntos de su alma y de su experiencia como madre, maestra y ser de luz. Sus poemas y su club “Starfish” (Estrella del Mar) nos instan a sentir nuestra vulnerabilidad junto a nuestra humanidad. Melanie y Francisco se han convertido en dos educadores de sus seguidores y de la diversa comunidad digital. Sus Tweets nos llevan a la reflexion y nos han brindado con la calidez humana que todos necesitamos para sobrevivir los estragos de la pandemia. Conoces edificadores digitales? Quienes son? In 2007, she travelled to Central America where she was instrumental in establishing a shelter for minor girls who are and were physically and sexually abused. A Matter of Health Issues: AVAILABLE FOR SPEAKING  ENGAGEMENTS Ms. Orsini has tirelessly invested over 3 decades of leadership experience in Western New York.  In the late 1970’s she was Director of a Counseling Center in Buffalo. Early 1980s in Buffalo, she was the first president and co-founded of the Hispanic Women’s League, which still stands after over 40 years.  In 1985, she coordinated the first 5-10 hour day fund raiser for the youth of Buffalo. This was closely followed by being Director of Hispanics United of Buffalo, in 1987. During the 1990’s she was a Private Investigator as well as a Bail Investigator.  In 1992, she earned a full 4 -year scholarship, B.A., in Psychology from University of Buffalo. In 2007, she obtained a M.S. with honors. This learning process took her to London, England where she was trained and certified in Solution Focus as Trainer/Mediator.  In the same year, 2007, she elected to go to Central America where she was instrumental in establishing a shelter for minor girls who are and were physically and sexually abused. In 2010, she returned to the states and it brought her to Tallahassee, Florida.  She was hired by the Florida Department of Health and regularly volunteered to handle hotlines whenever there was a statewide medical emergency.  Besides traveling throughout the state to provide training and promotion of safe practices on communicable diseases throughout the state, she was heavily involved in addressing the marginalized Latino population.  Despite medical challenges, in May 2014, she coordinated the First “Tallahassee National Women’s Health Fair.”  In 2017, family issues brought her to southern Florida. March 2017, she pursued training in Trauma Incident Reductions.  Ms. Orsini is often invited to lecture or speak at events, serving as a keynote speaker in recent past events.   Besides various community engagements in New York and Florida, she manages her own health business, Lilly’s D’lites Spa Gifts, which addresses skincare, specializing in product treatment for cancer survivors.  Specialty: Well versed in Women issues, health and mental health issues, Latino history, being Puerto Rican, Human Trafficking, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Cancer, and the legal system. EDUCATION VS. MISEDUCATION Recently I had a conversation with a friend of mine about a show called “Adam Ruins Everything.”(*)  on paper, the show has a particularly good concept; every episode talks about misconceptions about the given topic in a humorous way. The host invites experts on the topic mid-way through the episode to add legitimacy to their claims. The argument was about how these infotainment shows are great for public education, but they are also extremely dangerous; the potential for public indoctrination is enormous. Just to give you one example: the whole “anti-vax movement” was started by a misguided TV show that was not even built on the premise of educating or informing the viewer. When you combine such techniques to boost your credibility, such as a  specific type of self-deprecating humor (lowering the guards we have against propaganda), quoting scientific studies or articles to support your statement, and even hammering it home with expert cameos, you have a powerful tool for education or miseducation. Most episodes are relatively harmless and indeed factually correct with extraordinarily little deviation from scientific publications. There is, however, a noticeably clear bias of the show being of the same political belief and demonstrating facts from their perspective. Potential harm exists when the show is incorrect, such as in the episode about mammograms and how it advises against the medical guidelines. I have personally talked to (watched that episode with) my friends in the medical field. Their reaction was complete disbelief that something like this was even allowed to air for public viewing. Anti-Vaxers, Flat Earthers, and conspiracy theorists can post whatever biased evidence they wish onto the internet, even on TV. It is up to us, the viewers, to raise the questions and decide what we should believe. It is only by questioning that can we reach the truth. We cannot expect the truth to just come to us. When it does, it is usually somebody else’s truth. (*) “Adam Ruins Everything” is an American educational comedy television series that aims to debunk commonly held misconceptions held by the public on a variety of topics.
