HELLO LATINO VILLAGE!
WHAT’S GOODIE WITH THE BOOGIE?
My name is Damiano, you may have seen me rapping around the town as The Miserable Genius. I am 23 years old and I have recently graduated from Ithaca College in May of 2019. I graduated with a major in Television Radio Communications and a minor in African Diaspora Studies.
In mid-November, I was exploring Buffalo after applying for another job I didn’t get and stumbled upon a copy of the Buffalo Latino Village. Out the corner of my eye, I saw the front page with LATINO VILLAGE written really big, and I snatched me a copy. I read through it and learned that there is a Bomba Class not too far from my neighborhood, taught by Beatriz Flores; I also read about an organization full of hardworking souls called PUSH Buffalo, that cares about my city, and last but not least, I read about a wise viejo named Alberto O. Cappas (Latino Village co-publisher), who spoke to college campuses about how we are not the made up racial word “Hispanic”, but that we are Boricuas, Tainos, Puerto Ricans, family of the Latino diaspora.
I IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the Latino Village. So much knowledge and history, and Boricua energy that my spirit has yearned, and my required needs could finally be nourished. I hit the internet, found me the number to El Batey Dance Company, contacted and spoke with Beatriz, and agreed to follow-up, and make sure I see Bomba. I then sent my song, “Paradise”, to Alberto, and he had Solomon Joseph, editor of the Latino Village, call me, and here we are a month later!
I have a new family….
In the very short time I have known Alberto, Ramona, Beatriz, and Solomon, I have learned so much, and I cannot wait to grow and develop with them more. My heart feels at home with these people, and I can assure you that we will make sure that every Latino has a way to feel that in Buffalo too. For far too long, Buffalo has been cold, lifeless, and colorless; change is coming, change is here.
From now on, you can expect to see me around a lot more, whether that be at an event, the internet, or in the paper. I don’t know what my content will be at this point, but I can promise it will be me and it will be 100% authentic and sincere.
See you next month!
